the time we ALMOST got in an accident...

... obviously we didn't die or even get hurt, but it was close... Now that you have had a heart attack here is the story... 

We were on our way home one night and had to stop at a red light. Pretty normal thing. Our light turns green and I look both ways to make sure no dingbats are going to run their red light. Everyone is nice and stopped so I start to go through the intersection. The road a head of me merges into a two lane road pretty fast and I see that a car is coming up behind me so I don't accelerate very fast so this other car can get in front of me. Really as it turns out the other car turned right and wasn't going to be needing to get in front of me. I start going faster and all of the sudden there is a car in front of our car!!! Some dumb butt ran through the red light and we almost hit him!!! Not only did he run the red but he was flying!!! And he went into the right turn lane to get through!!!! Thankfully, I wasn't going any faster and was paying attention!!! It was SO SCARY!!!!!! If we had gone any faster we would have hit, if he was going any slower we would have hit. So scary!!! Thankfully nothing happened!!!

 

We actually found out the next day that 4 sisters were in a terrible accident the same day. They are all okay, but still its scary stuff...

 

I bought a Walkman so I could listen to my CDs while I am in the apartment but the one I bought is junk and doesn't work at all!!! So dumb. I'm returning it today, but wont have a Walkman to listen from. First world problems!!! If you wanted to send mine from home out you could, if not its okay.

 

I'm trying to think of other cool things that have been happening. We have been meeting so many very prepared people lately, but none of them are actually in our area. Oh well, we are happy to send in referrals! Hopefully we will get some referrals soon!!!

 

Transfers are on the 5th of August. So keep that in mind. I actually think I might move! I'm fine if I stay here for the rest of my mission, but I think I'll move!! I'm really fine with anything! I just don't want a bike!!!

 

My health has been okay the past few days.With the weather change my arthritis is acting up, but like I told President Sweeney this past week in interviews, pain is pain.

 

I will need an orthodontist appointment shortly after getting home and a chiropractor appt!!! Really, I just need to go to all of my doctors right when I get home!!! So mom or dad if you want to get those figured out that would be great! I am totally fine if it is the day after I get home if that is doable!! I guess first we need to make sure my release date is the 19th. I have also been thinking about extending, but I haven't thought too much about it. I still have 6 months before we really need to worry about any of this, but be prepared for lots of doctor appointments!!!! oh and hair appointment will be needed too!!!

 

Funny story: We go to get our  car washed at the same place every Monday and we decided we needed to invite the car wash guys to learn more. We didn't really have time to talk so we just gave them our card with our number on it. So like 30 seconds after giving it to them we get a call and they say, "hey you told us to call you" and then they hung up. We were still at the car wash and the guys started acting really weird. They started texting us and eventually the guy asked if we gave him our number because he wanted to take us on a date!!! We were dying!!! We tried to explain that we didn't want a date we wanted to talk about God!!! He didn't get it!!! He was such a creeper!!! We just hope it isn't too weird when we go to get our car washed!!! We shall see!!!

 

We were out street contacting and walked by these two punk looking guys who were out smoking. We said hi but we all just thought that they would not be interested and just give us a hard time. We just kept going. We all felt bad so went back to talk. One of the guys was so interested!!! The other knew several members and wasn't interested, but was still very nice! The interested guy doesn't live in our area, but is dating a member so can learn more very easily!!! It was so cool and just goes to show that we really don't know who is prepared!!! we need to invite EVERYONE!!!!

Happy Fathers day to all you fathers!

 

Things are going well out here. I got a little dehydrated the other day. That was no fun!!! It is really hard to drink a lot of water when Arizona water taste so bad, and I just really don't like water anyway. The Mio water flavor things aren't cheap. First world problems I tell you...

 

 

Transfers are next week so no email until Wednesday. I dont think I'll be moving, Sis B and I think we will stay together :) We hope stay together! But just in case send anything to the mission office, not that I get much anymore! I guess that is what happens when you have been gone a year, people forget you! I'm totally just kidding!!! You all have lives, you don't live for letters. I know that I am so bad at writing people who have served because I would get caught up in my own life. So don't worry I know you still love me!

Random but today is my half birthday. I'm old. Its weird. Honestly, I always thought I'd be married before 21. Now I'm thinking I'll be 23. Weird... that is old. Not really, but it is. Oh well, that is life.

 

I think I will work at Disney when I get home. Maybe on a Disney cruise. I don't really know, but school just seems depressing, and Disney is happiness. I'll just go to Disney university and be a princess forever. Real life seems miserable...

 

People keep giving us updates on the happenings of the world, and oh my goodness, the world is messed up!!! It is actually nice not hearing all the scary stuff that is happening. The mission bubble is kind of nice. Its less scary to go around not knowing about the way the world is going. I guess we all just need to hold to the fact that this is all foretold and part of the plan. Its still scary though!!!

 

What happy news is there? Fun stories? 

 

Drink lots of water. Eat healthy whole foods. Read the Book of Mormon and pray daily!!! Go to the temple to do work for the dead, or just to walk around the grounds. Have family home evening. Be happy:)

Hello familia!

 

What is Joanna's new address? I was going to write Mia but I don't have her address.

 

How is everyone! I am almost at my year!! Austin is almost a missionary!!! Time is flying!!!

 

Our next transfers are on the 24th of June. Be prepared!!!

 

The heat is ok until it gets to about 103-105 degrees then I die!!! July and August are going to stink!!

 

This week we have zone conference (which I am singing at) and then we get to go to the temple!!! I am so excited!!! I love the temple!

 

I really don't have much to say. Our investigators are slow to progress, I hope some of them will commit to a date soon, but they are in and out of town a lot!!!

We were helping a family move and the boys had these awesome helmets. I'm the transformer and Sis B is the storm trooper. So cool!!!!

 

There is this really, really good pizza place here. It's an Arizona thing its called Barros!!! It is so good!!! We love it and eat  it often!!! Literally the best delivery pizza ever!!!

 

 

The members here are great! And they love Sis B and I! They take really good care of us! I love them. The plus of serving a state side mission (well one of the many) is I can stay in touch with them so easily!!! 

 

I really don't have much else to say. I love you all! Have fun and be safe! I don't remember where it is but somewhere in a recent Ensign there is an article about members working with the missionaries to do the work. In it, it says that the members are the sowers and the missionaries are the reapers!!! You go find them and the missionaries will reap with you! WE CANNOT DO THIS WORK WITHOUT YOU!!!!  Just remember that... we need members to help!!

Wow may fly by!!!! I can't believe that in like 5 weeks I'll hit my year!!!!! Not okay!!!! My mission is going too fast!

 

You might be asking how the work goes when it is so hot out. Well, the answer is it really really really slows down. Everyone is out of town or in the pool. We do get to totally rearrange our schedule though. It's weird. Also the sun is scary here!!! The sun is honestly hotter here. It hurts me. I am so thankful for sunscreen. I think it is working though, because I am still pretty white. I think the weirdest thing is it is hot all day and night. Like at night it only gets to the 80's. it is so weird!!! Thank you Georgia for having good weather! It is also weird that it hasn't rained for several months. My skin is holding up okay, but its still dry! Maybe I'll be tan when I get home though!

 

Sister Training Leader life is fun. My companion hates them. She hates when I leave and she has to stay with another sister. Its hard on her because we are doing at least two a week. I don't like that, but that is how the other Sister Training Leader wants to do it.  I might have to put my foot down though. Our area needs us. My companion needs me!!! Its fun though I like getting to help the other sisters! They are great! Many of them will be life long friends!!!!

 

I really like being a missionary. Yes it is hard work, but it is worth it.

 

 

Sister B and I are singing "The Olive Tree" at zone conference next week and then maybe in sacrament meeting and at transfer meeting. I will try to record it, but no promises! I'm excited though! We sound pretty good together!!! Really I just love being with Sis. B. She is a lot like me! We think a lot a like which is so so fun! We laugh a lot and just make the most of our time!

 

We get to go to the Mesa temple on the 12th!!! I cant wait! I love going to the temple! One of the good things about home is I'll be able to go whenever I want!!!

 

I should be going. I have a package I'll be sending home soon. I don't think it is really anything too exciting, but you can just open it and put it in my room or wherever the rest of my stuff I've sent home is. There is a lot I will just go through when I get home!!! So don't toss stuff.

I am still alive! I made it through my first exchange as a Sister Training Leader! It went pretty good, but the sister I was with is so good. My next one will be a little harder. It is never easy when you have to give correction. Thankfully the Holy Ghost helps me know what to do and say!!! Exchanges are so fun! I love being with other sisters!

 

There isn't really anything new here! The members are still great. I must say I do miss southern hospitality!!! I will leave it at that, because you all know what that means! People everywhere are so mean to missionaries! Future missionaries, prepare yourselves to just take it and love them anyway!!! Pray for those who despise you.

 

 

I got a Caresonic for my face. Best thing of my life! My face is so happy!

 

I am glad to hear that everyone is doing mostly well at home! It is crazy how much everything is chaging! It is exciting to hear that there is so much growth :) I have the best family! I really do! It sounds like you have some fun plans for the summer and that  exciting things are coming your way.

 

I hope I get some pictures of all the fun things you are doing! I love seeing you!

 

I've been trying to think about what I should do with my life when I get home, but nothing I've thought about feels right. Its frustrating.  BYU-I doesnt seem right, Provo doesnt seem right, KSU doesnt seem right. Nothing does. Thankfully I have lots of time to really think about that. Not only do I have 8 months before my mission ends, but once I am home I have three months before my BYU-I defferment is over. I really am glad I have more time to think and pray and counsel with others... I really hate school.

Good Week!

Well hello...

First off, Kevin your mission companion Elder C (I think his first name is Dave) says hello. Yeah crazy, he is in my area. We ate dinner at his house and he said he served in Michigan. I as a side note said, "oh my uncle served there." I didn't think much of it because I assumed Kevin was older (not because you look it, but because your kiddos are teens, his are tots). Of course he asks who my uncle is and I said he would have been Elder Moss at that time. Brother C's  jaw dropped and he said "KEVIN MOSS?!?!?" I was like, "No way! You do not know my uncle!!!" Well he showed pictures and told stories and yes, he definitely knows Kev!!!! Not only that but his wife works for Deloitte. Small world! It was so fun hearing stories about Kevin. :) 

Some of you know about the Mildenhall connection already!! Crazy!

(Excerpt from an email sent by a family in the Arizona area to Brother Mildenhall who lives in our parent's ward)

"After our brief exchange this week and learning you live in the Atlanta area, we had the sister missionaries in our ward over for dinner. Imagine Sis. Yates surprise when I asked if she happened to know you! 

She is a delightful missionary and we are very grateful to have her in our ward. Would you mind letting her parents know how much we enjoyed having her in our home? 

The world is so small in the church."

Other exciting news, I saw Stephenie Meyer on Sunday. She's in the stake. She dyed her hair red (not my fav on her, but whatever, not my head). So yeah that was exciting.

I also got a much needed hair cut today. Got 2 inches off, nothing too exciting, but I feel better!

Now if only my face would stop breaking out!!!  Oh well could be worse. My weight is no longer a huge concern. I heard that the average weight gain in this mission is 30 pounds. So I'll watch myself but I'm doing way better than I could be and I don't seem to be adding on!!! 

February 5th I am having a procedure done. Not a crazy procedure, but not necessarily a fun one!  So prayers would be great. Also the pain is back and not good!!! Other than that I'm good health wise.

I might need braces though. I have a tooth on the bottom that has gone a little crazy. Mostly because the ortho who originally put the permanent retainer in did it dumb!!! I have a tooth that is no longer straight. I did get it "fixed" so it shouldn't move any more, and my retainer should be good for the rest of my mission. 

Everyone in the ward I'm in has at least like 4 kids. It is a huge ward!!! And most of the people are under the age of 12. Also 40% of the ward are in part member families, so lots of work for us! Which is good, other than the fact that they are all too busy to meet with us.  No one really tells you that most of what you do on a mission is get out of the car, knock on doors, and get back in the car. I sometimes wish we could do the good ol' tracting!!! Oh well.

We aren't working with anyone yet, but are getting there. As I said, people are busy here!!!

Has it been this long already?

I am almost at 4 months out... weird how time flies.

Thank you so much for the package and letters. I don't know who put what in but  it was all soooo amazing! Best package ever! Y'all are great.

Everyone asks me what happened to my southern accent. I blame it on Grandma that I don't have one so just so everyone knows. 

Also, there are a lot of Yates up here and everyone asks if I'm related to them. I have no clue!!!! I probably am, but I have no clue. Dad, I need to learn about your family. Are you related to an Alma Yates?

Things are going well here, just cold :) but no snow yet!

Can some one tell me the status of Sawyer, Tyler, and MarLiece? I know they were all suppose to go to Brazil, but I haven't heard anything about if they have left or anything.

My Dr appointment was fine. It was just an establishing care visit. We just have to get my records from Provo and order the shot, hopefully that will all be done be the 13 otherwise I'm in trouble. We'll see what happens. Pray it comes, otherwise the pain will more than likely come back and surgery will have been pointless. At least that's what the Dr said...

I'll be driving again on Tuesday and Wednesday :( and not even on the nice small town roads. I'm NOT  looking forward to it! But I have to. We are going on splits. At least Wednesday is Cibecue day so I won't do much driving!

We no longer have any progressing investigators :( Which is a total bummer, but we are hoping to get a few this week. We have some potentials.

I stopped biting my nails and picking at my cuticles, yet my cuticles STILL look TERRIBLE!!!! Its really frustrating!!!! Oh well, I'll try to get them looking nice.

I've been reading the Book of Mormon trying to read it all the way through. Can I just say that those Isaiah Chapters make no sense!!! I need a translator! I have also been trying to memorize the Family Proclamation. That has been awesome! I am learning so much about it, really studying it, and am memorizing it pretty fast. I hope this will help me be able to memorize better for school. I am also reading a chapter of Moses a week. I love Moses! And I've only read the first chapter! He is very powerful!

I am starting to hate animals! I mean I love them, but not as a missionary!!!

I am learning a lot of very important life lessons out here and I am excited to share more of the things I'm learning once I get home. Sorry that is really just for the family. I love you my friends, but some things are just for family. So to all my family, be prepared to hear about my life changing experiences.

I really feel like I am becoming the person Heavenly Father wants me to be. I love being out here and serving my mission. Its so cool and I am meeting the best people.

Transfers!

Sorry I forgot to tell you that pday was Wednesday this week. Anytime we have transfers, pday moves to Wednesday so that the new missionaries can go shopping. Next week pday is on Tuesday though, so don't worry if you don't hear from me Monday. Sorry I forgot to tell you. 

Well first off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROOKE, GRANDMA JUDY, POPPY AND CAROL!!!! 

Sorry I missed those. To prevent missed birthdays from happening again can I get one of those Jesus calendars we have in the dining room and can someone fill it out with the family birthdays??? Please! 

Okay so if anyone wants to send me a package I would love one with chocolate covered pomegranate and peanuts in it, and also I would love some Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner... we only have a Walmart to shop at and they don't carry it there. So my hair would love some of that!!! The stuff I'm using sucks and is changing the way my hair looks(the color) and the way it feels.

Fun story, on Monday we had to go get an oil changed, the tires changed, and some car maintenance done. Took forever, but no big deal. We drive home, a 30 min drive, and see that we have a light on on the dashboard. It was an orange light that was an exclamation point with an orange squiggle around it... Well me knowing very little about cars and Sister Jones knowing just as little  had no idea what that meant (oh yeah Sister Jones and I are still together and in the same area, she is Sister Training Lead though). We decided that when we get back in the car, if it is still on we will call our vehicle coordinator and ask about it. When we go back out to the car, the light is on, and now there is a "ssssss" sound coming from the back of the truck... I knew that wasn't good. We find out we had a hole in our tire, and that it was losing air fast!!! We called the car guy of our mission and he tells us to change it and go back to the place we went to for our oil change and get the tire fixed. Well I have never really changed a tire, and Nissan makes it ridiculously hard to do any of it, especially getting the jack out!!!! I am happy to say that I did change it and everything worked out fine. It was crazy though. Makes for a good story, and at least I know I can change tires now! I hope it doesn't happen again though!!!! 

Things are going really good though, for the most part. We got two new sets of sisters in our zone so Sister Jones and I aren't  alone with all the boys. That's nice. We will be going on exchanges more often though, which is okay. 

I am so glad Tess got her visa, and Kevin Mason got his call!!! Congratulations!!! Has Sawyer received his visa yet? What about Tyler? Whats new with everyone in life? I feel out of the loop. Is Stone Mountain shut down as part of the government shut down what about Kennesaw Mountain? Tell me things about the world and family, Georgia and ward. 

I'll be sending pictures soon, probably today. 

I'm doing good and not gaining weight! And I'm working out, I feel really good. I'm still not sleeping well, even when I take melatonin. That's a bummer, but not to bad. 

I am really looking forward to my dr's appointment on the 29th, because I've been having pain again. Not too cool, but nothing I can't handle. I just hope everything is ok! 

Please tell the ward I love them and think and pray for them often! Who are the missionaries there? If you ever meet any from AZ let me know!    

I hope you are all doing well. Would love to hear from more people, but I understand that you are all busy with life. I have the best support group ever! I know Heavenly Father Loves me because He gave me all of you! 

Keep reading and praying. Go to the temple often, do your family history and write down the stories from your life. Future generations will treasure them. Everyone up here has so many stories from their families. I want that too!!! Keep a journal. Find family that need work done for them. 

Help the full time missionaries in your area! WE NEED MEMBER HELP!!!  If you are old enough to go out with the missionaries, youth CAN go out with them at 16. They need you even if they aren't  asking!! 

Go to church and keep the commandments.

My awesome weekly report

My week has been great!!! First things first, I saw an elk the other day... it was huge! And we hear them all the time! Its mating season apparently... 

If anyone ever wants to, they can send me chocolate covered peanuts because they are the best!!  I have a rash on my face that is itchy, but not super visible, thank goodness. I have not slept all through the night since getting here, but no worries, life is amazing!!! That was all super random, but that is life...

I wish I could tell you all more about Cibecue, but my family would hate the stories I hear. I don't have any crazy stories about it, and I am mostly safe being there. Mom and Brad would hate hearing the things that happen there (all while I am not! So don't worry) I will say that it is pretty dangerous. While I am there we aren't in much danger. We just go visit with the members, most of which are less active, and share spiritual thoughts. We don't do any door to door stuff! It is so sad going there though. Its a great experience, but my guess is that it is kind of like going to places in Africa where you see a beautiful baby and cry a little because you know they have no chance :( so sad... I wish I could take all of those poor little babies out of the situations they are in...

Our progressing investigators are also kind of a sad story. (Progressing Investigator= a person who is moving towards baptism, very likely to be baptized) H, who is done with the lessons and could be baptized any day, hasn't meet with us in two weeks because she is overwhelmed and stressed. J1 was sick all week so we couldn't meet with him. J2 is on parole so he cant be baptized. He is so ready for baptism, but cant do it because of church policy... Its all sad but we will keep trying and working with all of them!! 

My day to day life goes as follows:

6:30 wake up, then work out, then eat and shower

8:00 personal study

9:00 companion study

11:00 eat

12:00 go out and meet with people

5:00 dinner( usually with members!!)

6:00 back out to people 

9:00 home for planning

10:15 quiet time

10:30 sleep!!!

That is how most of our days are... well kind of, that is the assigned scheduled our real schedule is different depending on the day!

Okay, fun/terrible story! Saturday we went on exchanges, so Sis Jones and I split and went with other sisters (if it still doesn't make sense talk to your local missionaries or a returned missionary).  The sister I went with can't drive for some reason, but we would need to drive... so what does that mean? That meant I needed to drive!!! Well as most of you know, I HATE DRIVING!!!  NOT ONLY  would I be driving, but to be allowed to drive you have to be certified by a mission person to drive! I had to be tested!! The zone leader came and did it, but as others of you know, I have only EVER driven with either my mom or dad in the car. Only ever one other person!! For the test, I had my companion, the zone leaders, and since you cant just have two elders with two sisters, we asked a ward member to ride with us. It was stressful!!! but I did really well and passed. So that was Friday night and I drove on Saturday. I think I have only driven like 48 hours total in my life, but I did really well in all of my driving and I eventually got really comfortable driving! So that's good. Heavenly Father was totally looking out for me!!!

Mom will you teach me piano when I get home, and Jenny will you teach me how to crochet. Those are two things I want to do. I also want to work on Sign Language, Spanish, and cooking. To all of my awesome family members, when I get home will you have me over and teach me how to make some of the delicious food you make!! Because my family literally makes the best food ever!!! I just need to learn how to do things for myself and be more self reliant. ATTENTION!!!! everyone, conference is coming rapidly!!! ARE YOU PREPARING YOURSELVES FOR THIS?!?!?! All of you better watch it!!!! It could be life changing. It was during the October conference last year when the age change occurred, changing my life forever!!! Watch it. Love it. MAKE IT YOUR PRIORITY!!! It is so important to watch it. Do all you can do to prepare for it, but don't do it because I asked you to, do it because you need Heavenly Fathers guidance. Show Him you love Him and that you are humble enough to listen!!!
Also read The Family: A Proclamation to the World. It is very important that you read and understand it. Also (Grandma will love this) read the constitution and learn it. Last night, I went to a fireside about the constitution and learned more about how Heavenly Father had a great part in its creation and in the creation of this country. Study it and know it so you can defend it. It is being attacked and WE need to uphold it and make sure others do as well!!!

Now an evaluation question: Are you holding weekly family home evenings???  And NO I am not just talking to those with children living with them. Young couples, old couples, young and old families, everyone. We are commanded to have them. It isn't just a made up thing. Family home evening is inspired of God!!! Make sure you are taking time each week to have this spiritual time with those you love! If you have questions about what you need to do for them, read true to the faith about Family home evening. It is so important that we are strengthening these family bonds!!! Family is the most important thing we have. Are you truly showing that?!? The home is as sacred as the temples. Are we using them wisely? Everyone please don't think I am being a stinker or anything. I just understand why we are asked to do it. Please make time for your family.

Is this really 7 weeks??? I don't even remember!!!

Well hello loved ones! How are you?

My district that just left Monday was soooo amazing!! They changed my life!!! We were all so close and we had amazing times together!!! I am so sad they have left!!! But its ok, that is life!

I'm really sorry these letters are so bad! I just never know what you all actually want to hear.

Jenny thank you so much for the doughnuts they were so tasty! I love getting packages and letters! Its the best! Especially now that I have been out for like a month and a half. Time had literally flown! I feel like I'll be home soon...

I would love some hard copies of pictures so I can see my family! I love getting letters about Riley and all of my cousins! I miss you all and love hearing about your adventures!

This letter might be shorter because I only get one hour and I have lots of people to write! But I guess something is better than nothing!

I really hope everyone is doing well and loving life.

OK so one of the teacherish people I have right now knows Cody! And yesterday he told me he had sent Cody a Facebook message telling him that he knew me... small world. I'm curious to know if he said anything else! I was kinda of jealous, because he is allowed to talk to my family whenever and I only get 1 hour a week. oh well that is missionary life for ya... And 17 months isn't that far away!!!

I feel super bad because I know this letter is super lame, but all I do is go to class and teach investigators, that aren't real investigators, so life is a little dull. I don't have any super cool stories other than Saturday I taught four people and it went amazing!!! like the spirit was leading the lesson and touched everyone!!!

I do love the MTC!

Family and friends- Share the gospel with everyone! They need it! Its not hard! Just open your mouth and Heavenly Father will take over!!!

Also go do those family names in the temple! And work on furthering our genealogy. Have Family Home Evening activities and just do it!!!! they need it!!!!

Quick Update

Hey so never mind. I will be leaving on the 29th of this week... so one more district... I'm a little bummed, but it is ok. Obviously Heavenly Father needs me here!

Waiting in the hospital

This is Bresia's sister Brooke writing-
I received a call Wednesday evening informing me that Sister Yates would be having an out patient surgery this morning, so I am composing this post from Utah Valley Hospital.

Bresia's doctors determine that they needed a closer look at the problems and she had an abdominal scope.  It has been such a blessing to be here with her and to spend time with one of her companions. She has been very patient and strong through this entire process.  It is hard even going to the doctor with out your mom for the first time when you have a cell phone! It has been a great learning experience for her and she has learned so much more independence.

Her scope has gone well, she had a few problem areas that they were able to "clean-up" and will look into the best options to manage any future outbreaks.  She is coming out of the anesthesia now. She says she feels like an old person and her arms are heavy.

Quick update

Due to a pre-existing condition, Bree is having to undergo some additional tests before she will be allowed to leave the Missionary Training center for Arizona. Prayers that the tests will go well and that her health can be found without surgery are much appreciated!
